How to take on a new skill in a way that fits you best
Apr 09, 2024Do you know that feeling of excitement when you decide to learn a new skill? Only to have it last for a short while, because you are way in over your head? This post is going to talk about learning new skills and how to do this best. Spoiler alert: It is not about doing everything perfect overnight.
When we talk with others about picking up new skills, we tend to get very enthusiastic. Why shouldn’t we? There is something exciting about learning new things, it gives us energy and the brain really loves it.
What we don’t always consider is how much we can spend on that one new thing. Even when others might tell us to take it easy, we tell ourselves that others can do it all, so why can’t we? Let’s talk about these differences:
- Being willing to do something doesn’t always align with being able to do it as well. If you are limited on energy, please respect you body’s boundaries and the same applies to what your mind can process at a stretch;
- When you want to become as good as your role model, keep in mind that this person has been doing it for a longer period than you may want to learn it right now. New things do not happen overnight. Remember learning to walk and talk?
- We usually have other things to do as well. It is about fitting a new habit in, into an existing schedule. That means starting up things slowly. Start with ten minutes a day and see if you can be consistent doing so;
- Be realistic about how much you can do when still learning something. It doesn’t make sense to work on something every day for hours on end, when it’s new. Instead, see what you can do with one hour a week, if you consistently use those 10 minutes a day;
- Day seven is the day you can reflect and get what you have been working on out there, if that is what you are already up for;
- Take time to adjust. Do what feels good to you. Do it one step at a time!
What’s that one thing you want to work on and how are you going to make this happen without overdoing it?
