Suddenly it hits me

Disclaimer: I don’t encourage speeding to get rid of your frustration. This is a snapshot from the past.

*****

I’m watching Miami Vice. Second episode, first season. The episodes where Tubbs gets to meet Crockett and they are starting to stick out for one another.

 There’s a lot I don’t remember, or maybe vaguely. I don’t remember sonny having a kid and an ex-wife called caroline. I don’t or vaguely remember the alligator and I’m thinking animal cruelty? It’s such a not done nowadays. However, they do come up with a reason why it’s okay.

 I’m listening to the music. Their tune is described as rock music, but it’s got synthesizers and all in there. New wave would be more like it.

 Flashes of Airwolf are going through my mind and I’m making comparisons. The film quality looks the same, the time era must be the same. But Miami Vice has been made so high quality, with lots of money involved. Airwolf might have had a pricy helicopter, but it’s a whole different standard compared to Miami Vice. perhaps it was earlier than I remember.

 The hair, the music, the clothing, including the extra belts, it all brings me back to the eighties and early nineties, when I used to dress up like that as well.

I am aware that watching this I probably took a lot for granted. It was a different time, a different age, with only so little knowledge and experience on my end.

I am three times that age now. How is it possible this brings back so many memories.

 Then I see Crockett (Aka Burnett which I also didn’t think about) in the car with Tubbs. He’s upset. He just learned that his best friend has betrayed him and the team. He’s driving, high speed. In the backgroundPhil Collins is playing, “In the air”. There’s this thought passing through my mind really quickly about how sick he is nowadays, yet still performing. Such a great drummer. Now that I’m listening I realize he’s playing with the count, something which skilled drummers do. And he is a skilled drummer. Something else I hadn’t done and known back then.

 And then it hits me. Listening to Phil Collins and watching Crockett speeding in the car, I realize I know that feeling of pushing that gas pedal and just wanting to forget it all, cause it hurts so badly. Wham. It all comes back. I don’t do it anymore, but that frustration, not feeling understood, I’ll never forget it. It’s like something is pushing heavily against the back of my eyes. It’s a mixture of tears and immense sadness and a lot of frustration.

 Oh and a funny fact, who though I would have traveled to the other side of Florida and having it feel like coming home. Not me, not in a million years. Not back then.

 P.S. Apparently I’m not the only one who considers this one of the most epics scenes ever on television.

Additional info:

Miami Vice ran from 1984-1989 (could have been a bit later in the Netherlands)

  • I graduated from high school in ‘89;
  • Airwolf ran from 1984-1987, but had a lot of flashbacks to Vietnam. The similarity makes sense though. The difference too;
  • In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins is from 1981.

A Deeper Look at the Meaning Behind “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins

“One day I was working on a piece in D-minor, the saddest [key] of all. I just wrote a sequence, and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration,” he said. said

Distraught and heartbroken, Collins sang his emotions into existence. The lyrics almost seem as if they were divined—they just spilled out of the singer. In an interview with Mix, Collins explained that he simply “opened [his] mouth and [the lyrics] came out.” He then recounted how he didn’t even write the lyrics down at first, but rather penned the lyrics on a piece of scrap paper after hearing his vocals back.

Lyrics

In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lordAnd I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lordCan you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord

Well, if you told me you were drowningI would not lend a handI've seen your face before my friendBut I don't know if you know who I am

Well, I was there and I saw what you didI saw it with my own two eyesSo you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've beenIt's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lordI can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord

Well I remember, I remember don't worryHow could I ever forgetIt's the first time, the last time we ever metBut I know the reason why you keep this silence upNo you don't fool meThe hurt doesn't show, but the pain still growsIt's no stranger to you and me

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lordI can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lordAnd I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lordI can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lordI can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lordWell I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
