MMM S1E12 - How to be inspired by playgrounds

May 21, 2024

 Change is about doing different things, including new things. Let’s take a look at it from a different perspective. What if you would go back to your childhood to start moving again, like you did back then?

As a kid, I stopped going to gym classes when I was in high school. My knees hurt too much, so it was no option. I never was good at working out. I never liked heights, or jumping for that matter. I visited a lot of hospitals because of sprains and worse when I was younger. In addition I had a mom who was worried I would slip and fall, so really doing something challenging was mostly discouraged.

Fast forwarding to 40+ years later and here I am doing balancing and climbing exercises at the local playgrounds. Who would have thought that to be possible? There are three big differences:

  • I have no mom holding me back;
  • I am curious if I can do it, instead of scared to fall down;
  • I can visualize myself doing it and even more so, I can already feel my muscles come into action.

So here I am on the playground, accompanied by the kids of my friend, ready to climb the ropes of the “climbing rack”. It feels pretty good to do it. I am in control. I take my time to figure out where to go next and pretty quickly I reach the top. Now all I need to do is get to the other side of the railing to end up on the platform. Let’s swing those legs!

I am proud of myself. I managed this hurdle! But then I still need to go down. Whereas the kids are showing me how they jump, I know that is a no-go for me. That might end up in injuries to my ankles, so I need to find another solution. I decide to go down the way I went up, except with my back directed towards the ropes.

Do you know the movie "The Fly”? Or any other movies with giant insects? I feel like a spider or some bug going down the ropes with my hands behind me and my feet going down first. If you watch it, it’s hilarious.

Here’s the biggest surprise of all. When I post this short (literally compressed to 30 seconds), I get 444 views and 4 likes in one day. This makes me wonder, Why do people like this so much? I have only explanation. They see someone who picks things (back) up, or better yet starts doing them for the first time, despite all the physical challenges.

If I can do it, others can do it without a doubt, assuming they are in a better physical shape with their joints and ligaments than I am. I guess me doing so, inspires others and that was the whole goal behind posting that video.

Oh… and in addition… I am doing something new. I am training the brain, giving it excitement, which leads to new neural pathways and a shot of happy hormones to go with it.
